Krimm said it was the first time “in a number of years” that a Hayward police officer was injured in a shooting. Scott Lunger to its Facebook page hours after he was killed in a shootout on July 22, 2015.
Lunger was taken to Eden Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
Sgt. Scott Lunger, a 15-year Hayward police veteran and father of two, was responding to an erratic driver around 3 a.m. with another officer when the routine stop turned deadly, authorities said.
The driver stopped and there was a confrontation.
A few moments later gunshots were reported, and one of the officers can be heard shouting to dispatch that his partner was shot. Lunger was promoted to sergeant in 2009 and has worked as a member of the department’s SWAT and gang units, Koller said. As mentioned by police, Lunger was a newly appointed Sergeant.
Police said they found a white pickup truck found in Oakland with bullet holes, a vehicle that matches a description of the truck involved in the shooting.
Krimm said no arrests have been made.
