Police taking back prescription drugs this weekend

This is chance to get rid of potentially risky , expired, unused or unwanted prescription drugs for free as part of a drug disposal effort.

Residents can turn in any unwanted or expired prescription medicines or drugs to police officers who will be on location during those hours. She said people often have the misconception that because the drugs are prescribed that they are safe.

Child poisoning or accidental ingestion are examples of potential and serious safety and health hazards posed by prescription medications; oftentimes forgotten in medicine cabinets.

More than 4.8 million pounds of pills have been collected nationwide during the nine take-back days.

Last September, Americans turned over 309 tons (over 617,000 pounds) of prescription drugs at almost 5,500 sites operated by the DEA and more than 4,000 of its state and local law enforcement partners.

The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has announced that the National Prescription Take-Back Day will be Saturday, September 26, 2015 from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM.

The DEA said that medication that sits in a cabinet unused is likely to be to abused at some point.

“Prescription drug abuse is a huge problem, and this is a great opportunity for folks around the country to help reduce the threat”, DEA Acting Administrator Chuck Rosenberg said in a statement.

There is an “alarmingly high” rate of illegal prescription drug abuse in the USA , McKinney said.

Several departments – the James City County Police Department, Williamsburg Police Department and Williamsburg-James City County Sheriff’s Office – will host collections on Saturday.

Prescription medication abuse and misuse is a growing concern and is also an issue in local communities.
