Police said that there was no evidence that the explosion was related to terrorism and added that there was no specific or credible threats directed at NY or the July Fourth celebrations.
The commanding officer of the New York Police Department’s bomb squad tells reporters Sunday there’s no indication it was made to harm people.
The young men said they were “slacklining” (where a rope is tied between two objects, like trees, in attempt to talk across it) when Golden jumped down and landed on the device.
A 19-year-old tourist has lost his left leg after getting seriously injured as he stepped on what appeared to be a firework while strolling in the popular Central Park here. His left foot was seriously injured and he was to undergo surgery at a hospital.
Connor Golden is wheeled to an ambulance after he was severely injured in Central Park by stepping on explosive material on Sunday. He’s in stable condition.
“Fireworks are fun – but let’s leave them to the professionals”, the mayor tweeted. Police say they found a bag of fireworks near the explosion but it wasn’t clear whether it belonged to Golden and his friends. Reportedly, nearby witnesses claimed that the explosion sounded like a “cannon”. It is now believed that police are searching the area, and employing dogs to help sniff out other devices.
The blast happened at 11 a.m.in the southeastern end of the park.
Fire officials say it happened inside the park at 68th Street and Fifth Avenue. Police say he’s from out of town, but didn’t give his name. “But you don’t have to be anything more than good with computers to get enough knowledge of chemistry to be able to create something of this type… from readily available materials, unfortunately”, he said. Police and emergency responders took the man on a stretcher from New York¿s Central Park after people near the area reported hearing some kind of explosion.
