It says the 2005 Honda City was supposed to be recalled for the airbag to be changed but the owner did not do so despite three letters being sent.

Sungai Buloh Fire and Rescue Department senior officer Rosdi Hainan, whose team responded to the emergency call, said the victim was found gasping for air in the driver’s seat.

The Takata airbag recall has been linked to at least 13 deaths, including 10 in the USA, as well as more than 100 injuries, and affects some 100 million cars globally.

The cause of her death is still under investigation. Honda also confirmed two other deaths that are linked to airbag issues in April and May this year.

This latest tragedy brings to four the number of fatalities reported locally in recent years in what has been described as a rupture of single stage driver’s airbag inflators (SSDI).

A Malaysian woman died after the airbag in her Honda City ruptured in a minor collision over the weekend, a safety official said Monday.

Honda said three recall notices were mailed to the owner of the vehicle involved in the crash, but the fix was not made, Reuters reports.

Takata is struggling to deal with a defect that can send metal and plastic shrapnel from the inflator canister hurtling toward drivers and passengers when an airbag is deployed. Unfortunately, the repairs were never made.

Last week Honda recalled 147,894 vehicles in Malaysia to replace deadly front passenger airbag inflators – part of a global programme which will involve more than 50 million recalls.

The auto she was driving was involved in a collision with another vehicle which activated the airbag causing a projectile to strike her in the neck.

Models include the City, Accord and Civic.
