A judge in North Las Vegas set bail at $1.62 million for a Nevada homicide suspect who was re-arrested four days after authorities say he broke a set of handcuffs and escaped from a police office. It was 25 minutes before detectives realised he had disappeared, a police chief said.

He then used his chair to climb into the rafters and escaped the building … then stole a truck that was left running nearby.

After four days on the run, Perez was arrested in an apartment not far from where the truck was found abandoned, east of Las Vegas.

Perez is suspected of shooting dead 31-year-old Mohammed Robinson outside a McDonald’s restaurant on Las Vegas Boulevard North on 27 August.

Alonso Perez had been arrested on suspicion of murder, discharging a firearm into a building, grand larceny auto and, ironically, escape.

Alonso Perez “torques it to the point, using some of his body weight, that it snaps the hinges”, said North Las Vegas Police Chief Alexander Perez, who is not related to the suspect.

2, 2016 photo provided by the North Las Vegas Police Department shows Alonso Perez handcuffed to a table in a police interview room where he was awaiting questioning in a homicide investigation.

Alonso Perez said nothing during an initial court appearance Thursday focusing on other criminal charges he faces stemming from another case. The video, released by the police force, shows Perez twisting the handcuffs on a metal bar on the table before they break.

He said he has already mandated constant viewing of security camera video of people left alone in interview.

Perez’s escape led to a manhunt, but when he was located, he engaged in a three-hour standoff with police. “Someone will monitor the video at all times”, he said. Mayoral-Lizarraga is serving two to five years in state prison.
