Reigning world champion Malachowski said all the money raised from the auction would be spent on treating 3-year old Polish boy Olek Szymanski, who has suffered for almost two years from retinoblastoma, an eye cancer affecting young children.

An Olympic medal made a miracle happen, as shown by Piotr Malachowski.

But Polish discus thrower Piotr Malachowski found something more important than the silver medal he won in Rio.

His donation enabled compatriot Olek Szymanski, who has retinoblastoma (an eye cancer affecting young children), to fly to NY to undergo treatment.

The medal was bought for about $19,000 on Tuesday when the auction was ended early. It is worth the life and health of a small Olek.

Brother and sister Dominika and Sebastian Kulczyk, the richest people in Poland at an estimated 3.4 billion, “declared their willingness to buy my silver medal”, Malachowski said. It is our great shared success.

The athlete announced on Saturday that he has put up his medal for sale to help raise funds for a boy with a rare cancer. “Unfortunately this time I did not succeed”, he added. “Today I appeal to everyone – let’s fight together about something that is even more precious”.
