And plenty of politicians from both parties have been doing that in the aftermath of the San Bernardino mass shootings.
There has been growing frustration in the USA that little is being done at the legislative level in Washington regarding gun violence, despite seemingly daily frequent mass shootings.
A 2014 study conducted by Indiana State University found that prior to the September 11 terror attacks, bombs were the most common weapon for lone-wolf terrorists carrying out attacks on US soil, but since 2001, lone-wolf terrorists have increasingly turned to high-powered guns as their weapon of choice.
California could go even further in its gun restrictions.
Last August, before the latest wave of mass shootings, Murphy and Blumenthal renewed their quest for improved background checks on gun buyers.
Murphy, who has been outspoken in pressing for gun control legislation, added at a news conference Thursday: “Members of Congress don’t get elected to send out sympathy tweets”. The Congressional Research Service tracks shooting cases in which four or more people are killed and, by that standard, the annual figure has tended to range only slightly, from about 20 to 22 cases per year from 1999 to 2013. On Wednesday, his office had tweeted: “The senseless loss of life in San Bernardino defies explanation”.
Some of the nation’s largest recent mass shootings have been followed by big increases in gun purchase applications, as reflected by the number of background checks performed by the FBI, federal data show.
WASHINGTON (AP) – It’s only natural for politicians to offer their supportive thoughts and prayers to those grieving in times of trouble.
As described in the article “The Mission-Oriented Shooter: A New Type of Mass Killer”, a mission-oriented shooter is a person whose mission is to kill as many people as possible, or to achieve maximum lethality.
A few blocks away, every Republican presidential candidate gathered to speak to a group of conservative Jewish voters. With mass shootings becoming essentially a daily occurrence, however, pressure for some action is only likely to build.
Law enforcement sources told CNN it appeared Syed Rizwan Farook, who along with his wife Tashfeen Malik carried out the shooting, may have been radicalized and had “soft connections” with more than one subject of global terrorism investigations. Nor should we insult law-abiding Muslims by suggesting they should answer for the actions of criminals.
But now gun control advocates are complaining about those who offer prayers without pushing for tighter gun laws. Back in October, in reaction to another mass shooting, she said new laws were unnecessary because “we don’t enforce the laws we have”. “Why don’t we prosecute them?” she said.
As she has done repeatedly, Clinton blamed Congress for inaction on guns. Obama points out that people on no-fly lists can still buy guns.
