Polls Tighten: Donald Trump Up 1 Percent in Ohio, Tied in Florida

Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump may be weeks away from squaring off in their first presidential debate, but more than half of likely voters expect Clinton to outperform her Republican rival, according to a CNN/ORC poll released Thursday. In Ohio, which a Republican never has been elected president without carrying, Trump led, 46 percent to 45 percent, compared with Clinton’s earlier edge of 49 percent to 45 percent.

The survey found that Trump leads Clinton 41 percent to 37 percent among likely OH voters.

Just 7 percent of likely voters said they’d cast ballots for Johnson, while 2 percent said they’d support Stein.

“The obvious takeaway from these numbers is that Donald Trump has staged a comeback from his post-Democratic convention lows”, said Peter A. Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac poll.

Of course, national polls may give you the temperature of the American electorate, but presidential elections are won and lost in the states and, more specifically, through the Electoral College.

According to the poll commissioned by CNN, a clear majority of registered voters (59%) still believe that Clinton will triumph over Trump in the election on November 8. “White college graduates have been loyal Republican voters in recent elections, but Trump is behind Clinton with this group across much of the country, including in some solidly red states”.

The Washington Post poll emerged as Trump broke a losing streak of 40 consecutive national surveys by major pollsters, showing Clinton with a lead in the presidential race.

The survey was conducted from August 9 to September 1 among 74,886 registered voters. Johnson was at 9 percent and Stein at 3 percent.

Trump would need to win the bulk of those toss-up states to get to 270 if the states leaning toward Clinton hold. Trump leads by at least four points in 20 states that account for just 126 electoral votes.

In Pennsylvania, Mrs. Clinton continues her lead, 44 percent to Mr. Trump’s 39 percent, in a four-way contest, but the race has tightened considerably. Those leads have diminished over the last month.
