“You’ve called women you don’t like fat pigs, dogs, slobs, and disgusting animals”, said Kelly before she was cut off by Trump.

Red State chief Erick Erickson said he had disinvited Trump from the event because of what he described as “demeaning” remarks about Ms Kelly who was one of three moderators during the first major Republican debate on Thursday night in Cleveland.

“Well, I just don’t respect [Megyn Kelly] as a journalist”, Trump told CNN via phone interview.

The flap comes as the Republican Party seeks to turn the so-called “war on women” playbook on Democrats in its bid to reclaim the White House in 2016. “I would certainly never say anything about a person like that, and I hope he apologizes because I think that he should”.

Meet the Press released just a short excerpt of the Rubio interview, slated to air Sunday.

Speaking on CNN, he said Ms Kelly was “a lightweight” and that he “couldn’t care less about her“, before making the comment about blood.

“Due to Donald Trump’s unrelenting and offensive attack on Megyn Kelly and others, we are at a crossroads with Mr. Trump. Just got on w/thought”, Trump wrote. Trump has not been shy about going after his critics – he gave out Lindsey Graham’s personal cell phone number and dismissed Sen. “Amusing to watch”, Trump tweeted.

“His comment was inappropriate”, said Mr Erickson.

The Trump campaign issued a statement on Saturday, saying, “Mr. Trump made Megyn Kelly look really bad – she was a mess with her anger and totally caught off guard”. She said the blunt-talking Trump is projecting his strength during the campaign.

His campaign claimed that the 900 activists who had wanted to hear from Trump on Saturday evening were contacting the campaign to complain about Erickson and others who “are trying to be so politically correct”. “Mr. Trump is an outsider and does not fit his agenda”. But I don’t recognize those words, so you know, she was spewing out these words, and I’m sitting there….

He tweeted on Saturday: “So many “politically correct” fools in our country”.

WERTHEIMER: I can’t even repeat what you said about him.

Bush, among the rivals scrambling for notice in a campaign dominated at the moment by Donald Trump, said, “I don’t view debating as a question of winning and losing. Do we want to insult 53 percent of our voters?” the former Florida governor asked.

“I want to show the liberal media that not since the days of Ronald Reagan has there been such a grassroots movement of people ready to transform our party and our country”, Trump said in a message to potential contributors.
