Pomeranz comes up short again in Boston’s 4-2 loss to Tigers

Drew Pomeranz allowed a two-run homer to Jose Iglesias in Pomeranz’s second start for Boston as the Red Sox lost to Detroit last night 4-2.

When Sandy Leon crumpled to the ground Tuesday night after getting hit by a pitch in the sixth inning, Fenway Park took a collective gasp.

The Red Sox rallied from four- and three-run deficits but were held scoreless over the final three innings in a 9-8 loss to the Detroit Tigers.

Saltalamacchia reached base four times, including a two-run single in the fifth inning that knocked Boston starting pitcher Steven Wright out of the game. Consider this: When they score fewer than five runs in a game, they’re only 8-30, compared to 47-13 when they score more than five. But the final result was a loss because the guy throwing for the Detroit Tigers is a former Cy Young and MVP award victor and Justin Verlander pitched like both last night, giving up just one run in a 4-2 Tigers victory.

“Hanigan was sick”, Wright said.

Tigers pitchers Daniel Norris and Jordan Zimmermann will each make at least one more rehab start with Triple-A Toledo before returning to Detroit. In 20 appearances (13 starts) and 82 2/3 innings this season, the 31-year-old has compiled a sky-high 6.10 ERA to pair with ugly strikeout and walk rates (5.99 and 4.03, respectively, per nine). It just wasn’t enough for him to earn his first victory in a Boston uniform.

Wright had to adjust after catcher Ryan Hanigan was scratched just before the game with flu-like symptoms. “Then I thought he started to get the touch and feel for it and started to have his typical action on the pitch”. “It’s tough to keep asking the offense to keep carrying us like that”.

Detroit Tigers manager Brad Ausmus has been reluctant to use closer Francisco Rodriguez in a four-out save situation this season, and Ausmus has endured a hefty amount of criticism for that stance.

With Robbie Ross Jr. still in the game for Boston, it was time to disallow the Tiger’s from gaining anymore offensive support.

With the win, the Tigers are now 52-48, four games behind the Toronto Blue Jays for the second wild-card spot in the American League.

The knuckleballer hadn’t allowed more than five earned (twice) in a game this season and entered the evening with an AL-leading 2.67 ERA, which ballooned to 3.12. With Mookie Betts and Xander Bogaerts aboard, Ortiz connected on a 3-2 pitch from Pelfrey to drive his 25th of the season over the right-field wall. In this series, the Tigers need him to be very unsafe for their offense, especially considering the Red Sox have plenty of big guns ready to hit on their side of things.

Steven Wright was able to complete his first 1, 2, 3 inning on the night in the top of the third bringing Boston back to the plate. It will be interesting to see if the Red Sox make any moves after Dave Dombrowski, the General Manager, has said he has received many different offers recently. The next seven to 10 days will be pivotal for him to determine his next step, Farrell said. LHP Daniel Norris (right oblique strain) will have his next rehab start in Double-A Erie on Thursday. It is Ramirez’s third career weekly honor and first since 2009 with Miami. The next game against the Twins, he gave up two runs and struck out eight in five and a third innings.
