Pompeo to secure release of United States detainees in North Korea

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has arrived in North Korea for meetings ahead of President Donald Trump’s planned summit with Kim Jong Un.

“We also want to make sure what our expectations are not”, Pompeo said.

An official at South Korea’s presidential Blue House said Pompeo was expected to finalize the date of the summit and secure the release of the three American detainees.

Last year, the country detained two other US citizens – Kim Hak Song, who had worked at Pyongyang University of Science and Technology, and Kim Sang Dok, who was invited to the same university to teach accounting. “I feel happy about it”, Xi said, according to the official Xinhua news agency.

“We’ll talk about it again today”, he said.

Li said that cooperation between the three nations on North Korea would “lead to joint maintenance of peace and stability in the region”.

While Kim would be giving up the last of his American prisoners, whom North Korea has often used as bargaining chips with the United States, a release could also be aimed at pressuring Trump to make concessions of his own in his bid to get Pyongyang to abandon its nuclear arsenal, something it has not signalled a willingness to do.

Little is known about the case of the third, Kim Dong-chul, including why he was detained in 2015, according to United States media reports.

Still, Mr. Delury added, it was easy to see how an outsider could become confused about a North Korean name.

We sincerely hope Kim wouldn’t have to take a ship, boat or submarine to reach the venue of his summit with Trump.

The chief USA diplomat is also on a mission, hoping to secure the release of three Americans detained by Pyongyang.

Kim, meanwhile, registered his desire for Chinese support in the talks, particularly his call for a “phased and synchronous” approach to denuclearization, as opposed to Trump’s demand for an immediate end to its nuclear programs. They also expressed support for the Panmunjon Declaration that was agreed upon in the Moon-Kim summit.

President Trump revealed the trip while announcing his decision to withdraw from the Iran nuclear deal, suggesting that the two sides have already nailed down a time and place for the historic, high-risk meeting.

Kim traveled to Beijing by train in March for his maiden official trip overseas and first meeting with the Chinese president.

“As long as relevant parties eliminate the hostile policy and security threats against North Korea, Pyongyang does not need to have nuclear weapons, and denuclearization is achievable”, said Kim, according to the Chinese statement.

“The Kimness of the Kim regime Looks pretty well recognized”, John Delury, a Specialist on China and the Koreas in Yonsei University in Seoul, South Korea’s funds, said having Fun in a phone interview.

“If so, how to abolish North Korea’s existing nuclear bombs estimated at about 20 will be the last remaining hurdle to the settlement of their negotiations”.

China sent troops to fight on the North’s behalf in the 1950-53 Korean War, and for years afterward, the relationship was described as being “as close as lips and teeth”. At the trilateral summit among Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, South Korean President Moon Jae-in and Chinese Premier Li Keqiang in Tokyo regional free trade agreements were also discussed.
