Taylor Swift led the field on Tuesday with six nominations for the 2015 American Music Awards, closely followed by British singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran and Canada’s The Weeknd.

Ed Sheeran and The Weeknd are the second most-nominated stars on the list, with five nominations apiece. Swift earned six AMA nominations, including nods for artist of the year, song of the year (“Blank Space”) and “collaboration of the year unleashed by T-Mobile”, as the AMAs call it. The latter was for “Bad Blood”, her pairing with Kendrick Lamar.
Trainor, country newcomer Sam Hunt, Britain’s Sam Smith, rapper Nicki Minaj and Ohio-based indie rock band Walk the Moon, each had three nominations. The singer will become the most-honored female artist in the show’s history.
So basically, the biggest artists-that is, those with the biggest public profiles and more often than not the biggest industry backing-get the most nominations.
The AMAs, which were created by Dick Clark in 1973, base the nominations on “key fan interactions as reflected in Billboard Magazine and on Billboard.com, including album and digital singles sales, radio airplay, streaming, social activity and touring”, according to a statement.
The final voting by fans for Artist of the Year is taking place now and the current ten finalists will be whittled down to just five by the November 11 voting deadline.
Jennifer Lopez – whose Las Vegas show launches in January – is set to host the show, which will air live from Los Angeles’ Microsoft Theater.

Sheeran’s “x” and Smith’s “In the Lonely Hour” join “1989” in the competition for best album. They’ve both won the category four times, along with Aretha Franklin and Mariah Carey.
