Pop star prince had no will, sister says in court documents

Prince’s sister says the superstar musician had no known will and she’s filed paperwork asking a Minnesota court to appoint a special administrator to oversee his estate.

“A few hours ago, Prince was celebrated by a small group of his most beloved: family, friends and his musicians, in a private, handsome ceremony to say a loving goodbye”, the rep said in a statement to PEOPLE. According to Nielsen Music, 2.3 million Prince songs were downloaded in the three days after his death.

Prince was a meticulous planner, a thoughtful businessman and well-versed in legal matters (music-related ones, anyway), but it’s still unclear if he had a will. Spokesmen for the star declined to comment on plans for his estate. He said it would be unusual for Prince not to have done so.

Our sources say various professionals raised the issue of a will with Prince but he never had an interest in drafting one.

As a result, his six brothers and sisters look set to benefit from the music icon’s huge wealth, as Minnesota law dictates a person’s closest living relatives will equally share in the estate in the event a resident dies without a will.

According to a recent report from TMZ, it’s looking more and more likely that Prince died without leaving a will.

Prince sold over 100 million albums on his lifetime, according to Warner Music Group.

His best-earning touring year, when he took in $87.4 million, was 2004, the year he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and two decades after the soundtrack to “Purple Rain” went multi-platinum. And Prince was known to throw expensive parties.

In April 2013, Prince lost a lawsuit filed in New York State’s Supreme Court brought by perfume maker Revelations Perfume and Cosmetics Inc. for failing to promote the “3121” perfume line named after his 2006 album. That included potential licensing rights to film, TV, commercials and videogames that Prince rarely exploited, Husney said in an interview last week.

Prince was a multimillionaire, with a valuable brand, a successful record label called NPG and the Paisley Park recording studio.
