Pope Francis: 5 themes from his speech to US Congress

“I hope the pope made a lasting impression on the members of Congress. He emphasized that we, as elected officials, are the face of the American people”.

“I am happy that American continues to be a land of dreams”, he said.

Two of the city’s top Democrats used Pope Francis’ speech to Congress on Thursday to reaffirm their position immigration, inequality and the treatment of refugees who seek asylum from the United States.

At a time when migrants and refugees are streaming into Europe, and illegal migration is a US election issue, immigration featured highly in the Pope’s address.

Many conservatives in the US Senate and House of Representatives deny that climate change is a result of mankind’s industry and agriculture, and have opposed emissions controls created to slow global warming.

The issue of the Catholic Church’s place in America will ultimately be decided without the Holy Father’s input-so it’s not as if Francis is denying Catholics an important tool in the fight to preserve their religious liberty.

– While Pope Francis was still in Washington Thursday morning, a very lifelike wax figure of his holiness from Madame Tussauds was appearing on Good Day New York.

“Much of his speech was uplifting, such as focusing on the importance of family as the foundation for our society”, he said.

“The pope’s message should inspire leaders of all backgrounds-in the USA and abroad-to take action to protect the Earth, grow our economies, and enhance the resilience of the most vulnerable”. It was an honor to share this experience with many New Mexicans who came to our nation’s capital to be part of this historic event.

“The complexity, the gravity and the urgency of these challenges demand that we pool our resources and talents, and resolve to support one another with respect for our differences, and our convictions of conscience”, he said.

Cops were seen on every street and the traffic was grid locked for hours as the Pope kept up with his engagements for the day.

The mayor added of the pontiff: “He will make that choice, so it’s a balance that we’re striking”.

There are not many Argentinians who could address the US Congress. In fact, he was also the first Pope to address the Congress in a country that has had a hard relationship with the Catholic Church.
