Mother Teresa, who was born Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu to Albanian parents in Spokje, the capital of modern Macedonia, in 1910, founded the Congregation of the Missionaries of Charity and the Missionaries of Charity. After she won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979, Harvard University invited her to give their annual class day speech in 1982.

Mother Teresa died in 1997 at the age of 87.

Yesterday, Pope Francis approved the second miracle needed to kick off the canonization process which would make her an official saint.

She was beatified as Blessed Teresa of Calcutta by Pope John Paul II in 2003.

Teresa was the foundress of the Congregation of the Missionaries of Charity and the Missionaries of Charity, and has been recognized for her devotion serving the poor in the Indian city of Calcutta.

“Bergoglio had Mother Teresa behind him, nearby, and he heard her intervene often with great strength, without letting herself in any way be intimidated by this assembly of bishops”, the Vatican spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi, later recounted.

The first human being to recognize Jesus when He came in the flesh was an unborn child, John the Baptist, she said.

According to the church, the qualifying miracle was when the late missionary’s intercession healed a Brazilian man’s brain tumors in 2008. The patient was taken for an emergency operation on December 9, but the neurosurgeon returned to find the patient awake and without pain.
