Pope Francis landed in the United States Tuesday afternoon for the first time, launching a six-day visit in which he’ll attempt to tackle the nation’s most significant political, social and economic controversies.

Patrick’s family lives in Northern Virginia, and plans to see the pope during his visit to Washington, DC.

“I think the pope appeals surely to the richness of resources… that are here to be put to the common good of humankind”, said Lombardi.

While they say there is no credible threat tied to the pope’s visit, they note that they won’t be taking any chances.

Pope Francis arrived in D.C. just before 4 p.m. on Tuesday.

The leader of the world’s 1.2 billion Roman Catholics, whom conservatives have accused of being too liberal, said his pleas for social justice were based on Church teachings. “He’s new, he’s bringing change to the Catholic Church”.

“We did not talk about the past”, he said, except for “his experience with the Jesuits”. Get the details on the Pope’s visit, and find out more about Michelle Obama’s hair and makeup.

After Wednesday’s official reception at the White House, Francis will travel via motorcade around the Washington Mall to St. Matthew’s Cathedral, where he will address hundreds of American Catholic bishops and canonize Junípero Serra at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. St. Peter who walked with Jesus was the first Pope, and it is believed that Peter was the anointed one to build the Church. “Some people think I’m a bit leftist”, he said.

When the Pope is finished with his trip, the planes he used will simply go back into routine services.

His corrective about his ideology is a significant prelude to his arrival in the US , as the Democratic Party has increasingly attempted to claim Francis as their policy champion over the past few months.

Tobin said the pope will show that same compassion when he speaks to the world this week. Presidents usually make important visitors come to the White House, but this is a rare visit.

He was greeted by President Obama and his family and after a brief private meeting he made his journey through the streets of Washington ending at the Apostolic Nunciature, also known as the Vatican’s embassy, where he will spend his evenings while staying in the nation’s Capitol.
