Leaders in the Catholic Church say the pope’s delivery in Spanish serves as a nod to the new saint he will canonize, Junipero Serra, a Spanish-American missionary who established a chain of missions in California during the late 1700s.
If Pope Francis discussed these two topics in his address to Congress, King said the pontiff would be focusing on “less religion and theology and more politics”.
“It was very clear I was not holding private audiences in the nunciature – not even with other heads of state”, the pope said, apparently referring to Argentine President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner, who had traveled to Havana for the papal visit.
Francis arrives Saturday in Philadelphia. Reverend Mary Lewis Wilson of Union Temple Baptist Church in Southeast agreed. “I would say it’s one of the largest, if not the largest special event we’ve ever seen here”.
In fact, Pope Francis (born Jorge Mario Bergoglio) will reportedly be treated to performances from Jennifer Hudson, Gloria Estefan and Harry Connick Jr. when he delivers mass at Madison Square Garden later this week.
“I think it is wonderful that he is coming”. “Yay for Pope Bergoglio!!” the Jersey Shore alumna tweeted when he was first elected into the office.
He called Francis a source of inspiration not just for Catholics, but for people of all religions around the world.
Pope Francis has begun his tour of the USA , where he is expected to greet millions of American Catholics and address thorny issues like climate change and income inequality. The government had hoped Francis would condemn the US economic embargo, which Obama is urging the Republican-controlled Congress to end.
Olson and six families from the Fort Worth Diocese plan to blog throughout the Pope’s visit and the WMOF.
U.S. Rep. Joseph Crowley, a Catholic Democrat from New York, told The New York Times.
