For a taster track of the Pope’s rocking musical take, check out this clip on the Rolling Stones website.
Pope Francis, aka “Cool Pope”, just got even cooler: He’s dropped a hot new pop-rock song, “Wake up! Go! Go!”
The album features Pope Francis delivering scared hymns and excerpts from his moving speeches in multiple languages with musical accompaniment ranging from pop-rock to Gregorian chant. Musician Tony Pagliuca, who collaborated with Neroni on the album, explained to Rolling Stone that his own style is influenced by the time he spent playing for prog-rock bands and touring with artists like Peter Hammil and David Jackson in the 1970s.
The words of the track, which is called Wake Up! Go! Go! “Forward” and features Pope Francis addressing a South Korean audience in English past year.
But Pope Francis is more popular, among Catholics and non-Catholics alike, so his album is generating a lot more buzz.
John Paul II was involved in albums that included 1999’s “Abba Pater”, set largely to classical music.
You probably didn’t expect Pope Francis to release a pop single today – but, trust us, it really happened.

So the Pope does not actually sing or play an instrument on the album, which may disappoint some of the faithful. Wake Up is already available for pre-order on iTunes, where the quasi-title track is featured as an instant download.
