More than 150 firefighters with eight aircraft and 60 fire trucks spent the holiday fighting the fires.
Although an evacuation alert was lifted for the popular tourist town of Lorne and rain overnight had helped the firefighting operation, officials said the situation remained potentially unsafe with many hotspots.
To the sound of blaring sirens, hundreds of residents cut short their Christmas celebrations and fled to hastily organised evacuation centres as the normally packed route was closed.
The 2200 hectare fire began after a lightning strike on December 19. They will be given as much support as we can give them and financial support beyond that.
Devastated Australians will be returning to see their ruined towns after a raging bushfire razed more than a hundred homes on the Victorian coast over the Christmas period.
A Christmas Day bushfire in Australia has destroyed at least 53 homes in Victoria state, officials say.
Anyone still planning to travel to the area is being asked to check emergency warnings and to avoid the Great Ocean Road if possible.
“It’s quite huge, out towards Wye River”, he told Fairfax Media at about 3pm.
“There are two roads into Lorne but there’s only one road out”, Victoria Police Assistant Commissioner Debra Abbott told ABC Radio.
“It’s been very traumatic for a number of people”.
Organisers of Falls Festival, which is due to start on Monday in the hills just behind Lorne, are meeting with emergency services at midday today (Saturday) to make a decision on whether the festival will go ahead.
More than 16,000 revellers are expected to descend on the farm site from Monday.
