Popular Smash Bros. mod Project M ceases development
The team behind Project M announced on their website that the modding project is no more.

The team described it as “an excruciating call to make” but noted that it was made easier by the satisfaction they have with the latest update v3.6.
Cloud and Midgar do not have an official release date yet, but fans believe it will be revealed in this month’s Nintendo Direct. Fans also speculate that this Nintendo Direct will feature information regarding the Fan Ballot, an open ballot that allowed people to vote for characters they wanted to appear as DLC in Super Smash Bros Wii U/ 3DS. “With this in mind, we’ve made a hard business decision: We’re ready to finish development here and move on to bigger and better ventures”.
Files for Project M, which had been available for free, are no longer featured on the team’s website.
As for the new venture, no one really knows what it could be. This dedication eventually transformed into Project M, a community-driven modification that brings the speed and fluidity of Melee to the Brawl engine, as well as new characters and costumes.
“Project M and its community have grown larger than any of us ever anticipated, and it’s truly heartwarming to see all of the unforgettable connections and friendships that have been forged through this project”.
“We’ve spent six years polishing Project M, and rather than let it drag on through another several years of dwindling development and change-fatigue in the competitive circle, we’re going to consider our work complete”, continued the message from the developers.
The Project M developers said that instead of letting the mod continue, they will be focusing “work on new projects, built from the ground up”.

Morrison said on Twitter, “To clarify: We weren’t contacted, issued a [cease and desist], threatened or had legal action taken against us in any way, but we want it to stay that way”. We are still waiting for the results of the Smash Ballot that let the fans choose the next Super Smash Bros. character and there were leaks regarding Professor Layton and Shovel Knight. In this way, we hope to maintain the level of quality and professionalism you’ve come to expect from us. Sound off in the comments section below.
