Portland, Oregon will host the NWSL championship

Providence Park will host the nationally-televised National Women’s Soccer League championship October 1, it was officially announced this week. “Hotels have been unacceptable”.

In Kansas City, Morgan and the Portland Thorns stayed at a hotel that was plagued by bedbugs and riddled with mold. Morgan has not added an update saying her account has been hacked, and a similar tweet by teammate Christine Sinclair would appear to verify that the tweet is, in fact, Morgan’s.

Originally constructed in 1926, Providence Park is an historic civic gathering place that has played host to some of the region’s most memorable events, including presidential visits, a 1957 concert by Elvis Presley, the National Football League’s first game decided by overtime, Pele’s official last professional game, the 2003 FIFA Women’s World Cup and the 2014 AT&T MLS All-Star Game.

Morgan tweeted a warning to others who might be staying at the hotel. A pretty poorly-reviewed 3-star hotel.

“Upon learning of the situation, the League immediately spoke with both clubs, and FC Kansas City had already addressed the issue”.

FC Kansas City is the defending league champion.

Since it’s the home team providing the hotel rooms, it’s fair to wonder whether FC Kansas City deserves some blame here.

“.@NWSL there’s no other way to address continuing problems. We regret this situation and apologize to the player involved”.

Almost every team in NWSL operates in the red, Portland being the lone exception.

When this summer’s Women’s World Cup final set a television ratings record and got most of the United States buzzing about women’s soccer, it looked like we had finally turned a corner in the fight for gender equality in sports.

At the very least, these issues are worth keeping an eye on as the league wraps up in September and pushes toward a fourth season.
