Post Game Thoughts on the Sooners insane Win Against TCU 30-29

Without starting quarterback Trevone Boykin and star wide receiver Josh Doctson, TCU’s offense figured to be in trouble.

The quarterback is still nursing an ankle injury he sustained during last week’s game against Kansas. But instead of settling for overtime, TCU coach Gary Patterson went for two and the win, and OU safety Steven Parker batted down Kohlhausen’s pass to seal the victory and keep the Sooners in the hunt for a spot in the College Football Playoff.

With Boykin out, redshirt freshman Foster Sawyer will start tonight against the No. 7 ranked Sooners. Doctson, a former walk-on, has been one of the top receivers in college football this season, with 79 catches for 1,327 yards and 14 touchdowns. The touchdown pushed Oklahoma ahead 30-13 with 7:55 left in the third quarter.

According to oddsmakers at BetDSI, Oklahoma is the favorite at home tonight, as the Sooners are getting odds of -17 points against the Horned Frogs. With the score tied, the Cyclones had the ball with 42 seconds left on its own 25, but K-State’s Marquel Bryant came up with a sack and a forced fumble leading to the game-winning field goal. The Horned Frogs failed on a two-point conversion attempt, which, in retrospect, would have made a game-changing difference later in the game. Officials flagged the hit as targeting and ejected Summers, but Mayfield remained shaken up during the rest of the first half. When you consider that Kyle Hicks did not have a rushing attempt, that Trevorris Johnson was pulled after one run that led to one fumble, and the Frogs rushed only 12 times by five players (two of them being QBs) for a combined 34 yards, t’s obvious just how important AG was to TCU’s success and nearly upset. He returned after halftime without a helmet and Trevor Knight took over. It was the longest run of Perine’s career.Mayfield threw for 127 yards and two touchdowns in the first half.

The Sooners are making people forget their loss to Texas, although the result of next week’s Bedlam showdown with Oklahoma State in Stillwater could depend on the health of Mayfield, who had played himself into Heisman contention. Nothing short of a convincing win against the Sooners on Saturday will do. TCU doesn’t have a premiere running game, but they have rushed for over 200 yards in every game except their matchup against Iowa State.
