Potential Jared Goff replacement: Davis Webb transferring to Cal

Davis Webb, the former starting quarterback at Texas Tech, is headed to Cal, which has a decided Red Raider flavor.

Webb will be eligible immediately under NCAA transfer rules governing graduate students. Adam Munsterteiger at Buff Stampede seems to have confirmed it.

Webb, according to multiple sources, had been waiting on acceptance to a graduate program at Berkeley to announce his official transfer, and still has not announced. Ever since rumors started that Webb may be looking around after verbally committing to CU, fans started to worry that it may not happen. Both head coach Sonny Dykes and new offensive coordinator Jake Spavital have strong ties to Webb’s former coach Kliff Klingsbury. Spavital is a Holgorsen protege.

The 6-foot-4, 230-pound Webb is considered an NFL prospect and a candidate to replace 2016 No. 1 overall NFL Draft pick Jared Goff as Cal’s starter.

The spring game on April 16 provided little clarity in the quarterback race, though Zach Kline performed the best, going 15-of-16 for 202 yards and two touchdowns.

None of those quarterbacks, though, bring the pedigree of Webb. Webb was also considering Auburn as a destination. An injury during the 2014 season created opportunity to insert freshman Patrick Mahomes in the team’s final four games.
