PULLMAN, Wash._Stanford escaped a frenetic night in the Palouse with its division lead and College Football Playoff hopes intact.

Wazzu boosters only wish that had been the Cougars’ worst loss of the day. WSU attempted a two point conversion but they were held just short and Stanford got the ball back only down 28-27. A 30-yard run by McCaffrey set up Ukropina’s field goal.

As Stanford kept struggling, Washington State drove down in the final two minutes to add on another Powell field goal to take a 12-3 lead into the half.

Well that certainly wasn’t the game anyone was expecting. “They were more ready and more prepared than we were”.

Shaw received no argument from his WSU counterpart.

“Our first goal was to win a Pac-12 championship, and we accomplished that goal”, DiBiasi said. “We have to improve from here and be a better team”. Even so, this WSU team seems different. The Cougars, in fact, bear little resemblance to the confused, somewhat lifeless bunch that tripped out of the starting gate by somehow dropping the season opener to Portland State.

Asked if there were any positives to be taken from the defeat, Marks initially said, simply, “No”. “It’s kind of a statement for our generation, I think”. That’s how well the Cougar defense contained him.

“We survived by the skin of our teeth”, Cardinal coach David Shaw said. Falk has five or more touchdown passes in three straight games.

The Cougars – and Powell – can only hope such a situation does arise again. The Cougars are riding a three-game winning streak. A road date with talented but beatable UCLA is next, followed by a home game with underwhelming Colorado and a road contest with so-so Washington. The No. 8 Stanford Cardinal will meet the Washington State Cougars in Pullman on Saturday night in a matchup of two teams atop the Pac-12 North. Stanford (6-1, 5-0 Pac-12) is rolling and looking to remain the favorite to claim the Pac-12 title with a sixth straight win.

“It would probably be on a scale with Woodstock, I would say, as far as being a historic event where event where people gather”, Leach said, though he could barely be understood with his tongue kicked wide right into his cheek. For the most part it was good, except giving up the explosive plays in the second half. “A few defensive players missed their keys and their gaps”. “To will this team to victory was just phenomenal”. Stanford’s senior QB isn’t all that fast, isn’t all that nimble, isn’t all that great a passer. The Owls are 7-0 and coming off an impressive 24-14 win at East Carolina in a game that could have easily been considered a trap game. The Cougars were only his latest victim.
