Powell told Clinton of his use of a private email at State
“The truth is, she was using [the private email server] for a year before I sent her a memo telling her what I did”, he said.

A State Department Inspector General report in May acknowledge Powell and others’ use of personal email accounts for official business but noted that when Clinton joined the department, the use of a private server was neither allowed nor encouraged due to “significant security risks”.
Unlike Mrs Clinton, Mr Powell relied on a commercially available service to host his personal email account. Mrs Clinton’s private server was located in the basement of the NY home she shared with her husband, former US President Bill Clinton.
In its “Trending Topics” section, Facebook made the false assertion that former Secretary of State Colin Powell recommended Hillary Clinton use private email during her tenure at the State Department. Henry Kissinger and Condoleezza Rice were also present during the dinner. Hillary Clinton reportedly also pointed to Powell’s email practices when questioned by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
While Clinton is not a direct party in the FOIA lawsuit, her personal attorney, David Kendall, appeared at the hearing to argue that a deposition would be an exercise in futility, and insisted there’s “not one scintilla of evidence on the central question of whether there was intent to thwart FOIA”.
Former Secretary of State Colin Powell shares a laugh with then-Secretary of State Hillary Rodham at the State Department in Washington, Monday, Dec. 7, 2009, during a ceremony where his official portrait was unveiled. Powell’s office has released a statement saying he has no recollection of that conversation, but be did write to her about how personal e-mail has vastly improved communications.
In a two-page ruling issued on Friday, Judge Emmet Sullivan declined to order Clinton to testify in person in a case brought by the conservative group Judicial Watch.
The Court is persuaded that Secretary Clinton’s testimony is necessary to enable her to explain on the record the goal for the creation and operation of the clintonemail.com system for State Department business. Hillary Clinton told the Federal Bureau of Investigation that her predecessor Colin Powell told her that he used a private email account.
Voters have said in opinion polls that the email server issue contributes to impressions that Clinton is untrustworthy.
