Powerball jackpot climbs to $1.5 billion
IL is one of 44 states, plus Washington D.C. and two USA territories, that participate in Powerball.

Lottery officials increased their estimate of the huge jackpot for the second day in a row Tuesday because of vast interest in the prize. The jackpot estimate is reviewed daily. The signs were designed with millions – not billions – in mind. That was technically correct, but officials fixed the glitch by the time the jackpot grew to $1.4 billion on Monday.
But lottery officials, backed by mathematicians, say probabilities equal out over time.
Powerball officials will allow you to purchase all possible combinations, but it isn’t a smart thing to do.
Where can you buy a ticket?
Faulk, 56, will join people across the country Wednesday night when six new numbers – including the Powerball number – are drawn on live television.
The odds of winning the Powerball jackpot are astronomically low: officials with the game say each ticket sold has 1 in 293 million chance of being the winning one.
Roughly 95 percent of Powerball tickets are computer-generated quick picks, so people’s favorite numbers aren’t really a factor.
The current cash payout is $930 million.
Whoever wins will have to pay 39.6 percent of the prize in federal income taxes, and any state taxes. California, Pennsylvania, New Hampshire and Tennessee also generally exempt lottery winnings from taxes.
That has made some people uneasy about so much money going to one person when it might be better spent on public needs. The prize doubles to $2 million if the player purchased a Power Play ticket, which costs an extra $1 but boosts non-jackpot prizes.
“When the jackpots get big like this, it creates a frenzy”, said Brian Johnson, vice president of finance at Casey’s General Stores, which runs 1,900 stores in 14 states.

“We are very excited about this, and Lottoland is setting the pace in opening up winning customer opportunities right around the world”, Lottoland spokesman Luke Brill said.
