Powerball jackpot increases to $478 million, 5th largest ever

There was no jackpot victor, with the prize worth an estimated $422 million, but one Virginia ticket matched five numbers, worth $1 million.

There were a total of 1,929,319 winners of the Powerball on Wednesday and $17,798,750 of non-jackpot money was handed out in prizes.

The chance of winning the Powerball is small: 292.2 million-to-1. After no one claimed the jackpot on July 27, the amount goes up to $478 million – the 8th biggest in history. The victor could opt for a lump sum payment of $330.6 million before federal taxes or have the winnings spread out over 30 years. It is only a matter of time before a ticket manages to match the Powerball numbers.

People have until Saturday at 7:55 p.m.to purchase a ticket to be included in the drawing.

This is the third Powerball jackpot to crack the list of the 10 largest USA lottery prizes of all time in 2016. A drawing is set for tonight, with 44 states participating in the lottery along with Washington D.C., Puerto Rico and the United States Virgin Islands. He recently pleaded guilty to using his $3 million winnings from a lottery to fund a crystal meth operation. A winning Powerball ticket worth $1 million was sold at Shop ‘N Save in Bethel Park, Allegheny County.
