“The excitement is growing tremendously statewide and across the nation for this historic jackpot on Saturday night”, said Florida Lottery Secretary Tom Delacenserie.
Once you beat the astronomical odds and win, you’ll get to choose between being paid $1.3 billion through annual payments over 29 years or one $806 million cash payment. However, it could be a few more hours before lottery officials can confirm that a winning ticket (or tickets) was sold for the January 9 drawing.
No one has won Powerball’s biggest prize since November 4. Lottery officials recommend that if people pool their money, they put down rules in writing for splitting the prize, as it’s easy for misunderstandings to crop up when hundreds of millions of dollars are at stake. If you have one $2 ticket, the odds of winning are about 292,201,338 to 1.
To win the jackpot, a ticket must have all six numbers correct. “It only takes one ticket to win”.
The state lottery has sold more than $3 million in Powerball tickets as of 6 p.m. Saturday, and it sold $2.3 million Friday, according to a tweet by Woosley.
The jackpot is now at $800 million as of Friday morning.
On Oct. 7, the Powerball Lottery altered the number of red and white balls to try and increase the number of secondary prize winners while making it harder to win the top prize.
The frenzy was real Saturday afternoon at a newsstand in New York City’s Penn Station, where cashier Setara Begum said she was exhausted from taking about $10,000 worth of orders that ranged from a single $2 ticket to one man buying $500 worth of tickets.
“I’m probably going to buy a new auto, buy my mom a new house, and give some to charity”, said Deanna Collins. “You can throw out the statistics”, Gary Grief, Executive Director of the Texas lottery said.
