Powerball jackpot soars to $1.4 billion
But if the three days between the last two drawings are any guide, the total will surely swell. That increases the chances – but doesn’t guarantee – that someone will win the jackpot.

Seventy-five percent of all the possible combinations were purchased before Saturday’s drawing, Grief said, and he expects that enough tickets will be sold to cover about 80 percent by Wednesday. It’s now less likely that players will win the jackpot, but there’s a higher probability of winning a smaller prize (from one in 32 to one in 25).
The jackpot has ballooned since its November 4 starting point of $40 million and spurred huge ticket sales.
Great question. In Powerball, a multi-state lottery randomly selects five white balls, with numbers between 1 and 69, and one red ball, with numbers between 1 and 26.
The odds of winning the jackpot are 1 in 292,201,338, according to the New York Lottery.
The person who wins the giant jackpot could buy about 18 G6 Jets, about 2,000 Ferraris or could buy the Cleveland Cavaliers. He had no grandiose plans for a potential winning ticket.
The official Michigan Lottery site offers more information on instant tickets, raffles and other lottery games.
Just the number alone, $1.4 billion is so large, it doesn’t even fit on electric signs or billboards.
Maureen Rickrode, co-owner of Hanover News Agency on Baltimore Street, saw an uptick in business last week when the Powerball was at a mere $800 million, she said.
After taxes in IL, the victor would get a lump sum of $662 million, according to USA Mega.
Lottery officials say the estimated cash value is $868 million.

Powerball is played in 44 states as well as the District of Columbia, U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.
