Poyet: Managers not the problem at Sunderland

Sunderland owner Ellis Short is still thought to favour the appointment of Sam Allardyce, but there are significant doubts about the former West Ham manager’s appetite for the job.

Advocaat said: “I have made the decision to go after only eight games as I felt it was important to give everyone time to turn things around”.

Keane and Peter Reid remain well loved on Wearside, by the majority of supporters, for the way they embraced their time in the North-East and led revivals out of the Football League by securing promotion to the Premier League. This is the clubs 9th consecutive season in the Premier League since Roy Keane got them promoted after the 2006/07 campaign.

“They haven’t recruited very well, and the problem is who is bringing the players in?” Paolo Di Canio, Gus Poyet and Dick Advocaat all achieved top-flight survival in not dissimilar circumstances – all were out of a job before long.

Rodgers’ successor will attempt to get best out of these recruits to secure any success with a team now tenth in the Premier League.

He is also renowned as a manager who likes to build teams, which would fit in with Sunderland’s long-term vision.

One Sunderland fan supping on a cocktail at the bar thinks Moyes would have been ideal for the club and feels he was one man who could have kept the club up.

All of their leading targets remain in the frame, with Allardyce the preferred candidate thanks to his proven track record for improving sides in the bottom half of the table.

Advocaat’s departure leaves the club at a crossroads once again. Pearson was sacked by the Foxes at the end of June despite keeping the club in the top flight of English football. The Reds have won only four of their eleven games in all competitions this season, though there were already existing tensions after failing to live up to the heights of their 2013/2014 campaign last season. The club needs stability in terms of squad and manager.

The Daily Mail reports that Moyes is happy to remain at Real Sociedad for now, while Sam Allardyce has told Sunderland’s sporting director Lee Congerton that he is “not interested”.
