RailTel CMD R.K. Bahuguna said Wi-Fi service would also be provided at Cuttack and Puri railway stations while arrangements are also being made to enable Wi-Fi service at Puri railway station before the Rath Yatra in July this year. The passengers waiting at the railway stations can use the high-speed internet services for free. However, the formal launch will be inaugurated by Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu, union minister of railways.
The promised Wi-Fi facility will soon be operational at Pune Railway Station as the infrastructure necessary for implementation of the service is ready.
With the addition of Bhopal railway station, the network is now live in ten stations across the country and we are scaling up our efforts to roll out quickly to cover some of smaller stations where connectivity is much more limited. He then stressed that, as adoption of the internet has increased in India, affordable and easy access for the high-speed internet has been the real need.
Google and RailTel will take the total number of covered stations to 100 within this year, which will be a fifth of the number announced by CEO Sundar Pichai in December 2015’s visit to India. “With Internet services available, I can pass my time easily”, said Ananya Patnaik, a bank officer. While RailTel shall be providing power and fiber network infrastructure, Google shall provide the Radio access Network. The high-speed internet will serve almost 1.5 million in the proposed 100 stations by the end of 2016 year.
