D’Agostino helped Hamblin get up from the track after the collision, and Hamblin returned the favor when D’Agostino tried to continue the race but was in too much pain to resume a competitive pace. It’s the Olympic Games.

“I’m so grateful for Abbey for doing that for me”.

In this light, Hamblin and D’Agostino provided a memory that captured the Olympic spirit.

While Nikki lay there asking herself about what the heck was going on, Abbey grabbed her shoulder and mustered the strength to help her up. “I know that she’s young and she’s going to have so many more opportunities”, she said. Like, I never met this girl before. And isn’t that just so wonderful.

When New Zealand runner Nikki Hamblin tumbled and landed on her back on the race track yesterday, she thought her dream of winning an Olympic medal was over.

The 24-year-old Olympian from MA said Wednesday that she wouldn’t participate in the final on Friday. While neither athlete broke a record or even won the preliminary race, their performance has captivated the world, serving as a prime example of the Olympic spirit and good sportsmanship in action.

New Zealand’s Nikki Hamblin (l.) hugs Abbey D’agostino after they both managed to finish the race. “That’s an wonderful moment”.

“Come on, get up”.

It was then that D’Agostino, a Topsfield, Mass., native, realized she had suffered an ankle injury and would struggle to finish the race.

“I always told her, ‘if you go down, here is what I want you to do, ‘” Coogan said. Would you have done the same or kept running? However, what shined just as bright as her talent, was the kind of person she was. “She did the right thing”.

The two girls are being praised for their spirit and after protest from fans, the two were advanced to Friday’s final. But the knee D’Agostino limped on to the finish line was found to have a torn ACL and a strained MCL, according to USA Track & Field. “I’ve never met her before, isn’t that just so fantastic?”
