PranabMukherjee’s wife passes away

President Pranab Mukherjee’s wife Suvra Mukherjee today passed away at Army Hospital (Research and Referral) in Delhi.

Mukherjee, who is said to lead a disciplined life, paid floral tributes to Shankar Dayal Sharma, the ninth president of India, barely hours after the First Lady’s cremation, reported the Economic Times. “She was simple, loveable and a caring housewife”, she added.

Earlier in the day, the First Lady’s mortal remains were consigned to flames at the Lodhi Road crematorium. “Suvra Mukherjee w/o Hon’ble President of India Shri Pranab Mukherjee”.

Vice-president Hamid Ansari, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Congress President Sonia Gandhi and several Union ministers and leaders across political parties joined the nation to condole her demise, saying her warm nature endeared her to everyone.

Married to Mukherjee on July 13, 1957, Suvra was an accomplished Rabindra Sangeet, or songs composed by Rabindranath Tagore, exponent.

Two Bengali family priests chanted the mantras as the body was kept on a platform for people to offer flowers and pay their last respects.

Surva Mukherjee was also a highly talented painter who had many group and solo exhibitions to her credit. They have a daughter Sharmistha Mukherjee and two sons Abhijit Mukherjee and Indrajit Mukherjee. Close sources of President Pranab Mukherjee claimed that Suvra Mukherkjee was admitted to the hospital on Friday evening after she was found to be suffering a respiratory problem.

The thrust of Modi and Hasina meeting was on issues like promoting bilateral trade for which the Indian PM welcomed a proposal of his Bangladesh counterpart to jointly tap into big markets.
