Pre-New Year’s Eve, bad memories shredded in Times Square
SOUNDBITE: Maria Benardis, Good Riddance Day participant, saying (English): “We can thrive with unconditional love”. A Shred-it mobile shredding truck was ready to shred every amusing, outlandish, and even heartbreaking memories from the past year – whether it was an old photo or note that people wanted to have destroyed.

The sound of a mallet smashing reminders from 2015 echoed through Times Square as dozens lined up to take part in the 9th Annual Good Riddance Day.
A young woman had a special little something to put in the shredder at an end-of-year soul-cleansing ritual in Times Square on Monday – customized holiday wrapping paper featuring photos of her and her ex.
Washington state tourist Maureen Dexter was declared the “winner”. Dexter says she changed her diet, began exercising, and lost 75 pounds in 2015.
The scraps of paper from the shredding are used as practice confetti for the New York City Ball Drop on New Year’s Eve.
The contest victor said: ‘Good Riddance Day provides an opportunity for me to say goodbye to the old me in style. “I got stronger and better”.
While some people got rid of documents, others smashed items such as a laptop and a pill bottle.
