DHHS officials will continue to monitor the Zika virus outbreaks occurring in many countries including Brazil, the release said.

Such babies are born with brain defects and extremely small heads linked to the virus.

Health authorities have so far recorded a limited number of cases in Europe, but the latest assessment by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control declares that the risk in the EU of transmission remains extremely low.

The World Health Organization (WHO) says the virus is strongly suspected to cause microcephaly and has called the Zika virus “a global health emergency”.

Symptoms of Zika, which is transmitted through Aedes species mosquitoes, usually include fever, headache, rash, red eyes, and joint pain, the Ministry of Health said in a statement last week.

The Texas Department of State Health Services had not confirmed it immediately but admitted that it could be the reason.

The Zika threat has recently reached pandemic levels in Latin America and Brazil in particular.

Researchers have identified evidence of Zika infection in 17 of these cases, either in the baby or in the mother, but have not confirmed that Zika can cause microcephaly.

The state is expanding its program for testing for the Zika virus.

The director of the Ector County Health Department isn’t convinced the Zika virus should be classified as a sexually transmitted disease quite yet.

“One of the things that makes us in Florida a little bit safer is that we have much better mosquito control mechanisms”, said Florida International University assistant professor of biology Matthew DeGennaro, quoted by the Miami Herald.

Officials said they determined that one of the people whose donated blood was used in the transfusion had been infected with Zika.
