Pregnant women told to avoid travel to Florida Zika ‘transmission area’
The warning was issued for a one-mile section north of central Miami, a popular arts and restaurant district known as Wynwood.

They also say women who are pregnant or looking to conceive should avoid traveling to Zika-infected areas.
Health officials say people can limit their risk by using insect repellent containing DEET, wearing long-sleeved shirts and trousers and using mosquito bed nets.
CNN reports that the CDC issued the warning after 14 people were diagnosed with the virus.
Ten more cases have since been confirmed. Unfortunately, mosquito movements are also hard to restrain, and avoiding mosquito bites in the summer in Florida is easier said than done.
Mr Scott said the state had called on the CDC to activate a CDC Emergency Response Team (CERT) to assist the Florida Department of Health and other partners in their investigation, sample collection and mosquito control efforts. The virus is mainly risky for pregnant women because it has been found to cause severe birth defects in babies.
The Florida Department of Health said six of the 10 new cases were asymptomatic and were identified through its door-to-door community survey and testing.
People who have visited this area since June 15th (when the first infection is believe to have occurred) or later should avoid getting pregnant for eight weeks, health officials advised.
Florida Governor Rick Scott said the new cases, which bring the total in the state to 14, are clustered in the same square-mile neighbourhood in Miami-Dade County. The four cases initially reported involved two people in Miami-Dade County and two in Broward.
Merced County health officials on Monday said they have confirmed the county’s first cases of the Zika virus.
The virus is spread primarily via mosquitoes, and Latin America has faced an outbreak in recent months.
“And fetus may be infected, or may not be infected, we don’t know but if it is infected, they can have microcephaly”, said Doctor Krishna Kakani, a local OB-GYN.
“We will continue to keep our residents and visitors safe utilizing constant surveillance and aggressive strategies, such as increased mosquito spraying, that have allowed our state to fight similar viruses”, the governor said in a statement. “But that doesn’t mean you can’t prevent and be cautious here in the Milwaukee area”.
The mosquitoes in the area might be resistant to the two pesticides that have so far been used, Frieden said, or they might be breeding in hidden pools of water that have not yet been found by response teams.
Most people infected with Zika will either have mild symptoms, including fever, rash, and joint pain, or no symptoms at all.

“I think for now we need to be cautious, and I’m not sure in good faith could recommend a pregnant woman travel to that area of Florida right now”, Silverman says.
