Premier Brad Wall asks Trudeau to reconsider refugee plan
“It seems as though the balance is tipped towards youth as opposed grizzled veterans, but to have a few there I think is important and helpful”, said Gerald Baier, a political science professor at the University of British Columbia. “We share that desire”.

He says Friday’s attacks in Paris are a reminder of what can happen when even a few risky people get into a country. “Surely, we do not want to be date-driven or numbers-driven in an endeavour that may affect the safety of our citizens and the security of our country”.
But Canada’s health minister signaled Monday the Liberal government remains committed to the goal.
“To be frank, I’m not sure it will be possible” to meet the January deadline, she said in Montreal.
Trudeau’s first global trip as Canada’s prime minister was last November 15 and 16 when he attended the G20 Leaders’ Summit in Turkey and held bilateral meetings with other economic leaders.
Firstly, the UNHCR has already triaged the refugees and assessed those that would make ideal candidates for re-settlement, he said, noting that less than five per cent of asylum seekers make that initial cut.
The Paris attacks have not changed Ontario’s commitment, Hoskins added.
Federal interim Conservative leader Rona Ambrose said since the premiers lack key information on the refugee initiative, it’s no wonder they want a second look.
“If you’re living or working on the ground… you actually know a lot about refugee flows”, he said, noting that experts and staff working in camps will be able to generally determine which refugees pose a security risk and which don’t.
Peter Showler, the former chair of Canada’s Immigration and Refugee Board, says there’s a big distinction between refugees resettling in Canada and the hundreds of thousands of displaced people streaming into Europe.
“We need to do that carefully and cautiously but we definitely need to move forward”.
“I do understand the fear, but we have to be mindful that we can not generalize everything”.
On Monday, federal Justice Minister Jody Wilson-Raybould argued the government is taking a responsible approach to the matter.
“If there’s a chance that only one person would use the refugee process to come into this country with a plan to do ill … that’s worth a few circumspection”, Wall told reporters Monday.
