SOUTH CHARLESTON – After seeing its doubleheader Saturday cancelled, the Newton softball team didn’t want to wait to get the season started, adding a game on Monday at Southeastern.

The Wildcats lost Game 1, 5-4, and Game 2, 9-2.
Over this past weekend, the SFU softball team travelled down to Turlock, California to play in the Tournament of Champions, hosted by Stanislaus State.
Kentucky starting pitcher Autumn Humes was also impressive in the circle, allowing just one run on six hits with five strikeouts and a walk.
The loss drops Seguin’s record to 6-14-1 overall and 2-4 in District 26-5A.
The first game against WPI turned into a shootout, as both teams kept exchanging runs en route to six lead changes.
Against Dubuque, the Black and Gold began the scoring in the first frame, and never looked back.
Mineral Area catcher Sydney Stevens went 1-for-1, but exited the action after being struck directly on the index finger by a foul tip. The Lady Cardinals had a run taken away when Missey was ruled to have left third base too soon on a fly ball in the third inning.
After Warner went ahead 4-3 in the ninth with an RBI-hit up the middle with two outs and while facing an 0-2 count, the Warriors answered in the bottom half with an RBI-hit to deep center by Riggleman to scoreKylee Crews.
Thad Dial, who pitched one inning and struggled on the mound during Green County’s two-run third inning, redeemed himself, driving in a single and bringing in Jones and Murphy for two more runs at 5-2. The first game saw an incredible pitching performance from Azusa’s Kat Ung and Gaby Grabowski, who combined to throw a ideal game heading into the bottom of the seventh and final inning. Kasey Anderson was the winning pitcher for Brook Hill. Sophomore Marisa DeFranco then perfected a swinging bunt, scoring Gearin from third to win the game. Fisher would go on to get a strike out and later Junior Jordan O’Connor threw a runner out of at the plate to get out of the inning.
Mashburn said that there was so much talent on the team, and she was excited to see how far they could go. “We play with speed in power and it’s good to start the season off 1-0”.
“Coming off of going 7-1 in Florida, many people still doubted us”, Goldstein said. “We will continue to need the bottom of the lineup to come through like they did tonight”.
Even with low expectations from NEWMAC, Leonardos stressed they shouldn’t change the way they play.
“It kind of puts us in the driver’s seat of our future”, Central coach Michelle Efferson said.

TELL CITY-With eight returning starters joined by a talented freshman class, Tell City’s softball team should improve on last year’s 9-16 record. We have shown that we are very talented but we still have a lot of room to grow. Kamehameha Maui will play Lahainaluna at 3:30 p.m., while the Baldwin-King Kekaulike game is slated for 5:30, both at Maehara Stadium.
