President Barack Obama proposes tightening control of firearms in US

The murder of 20 children by a gunman at Sandy Hook Elementary School in 2012 has become a touchstone for the President on this issue, and a key motivator.

President Barack Obama cried openly during his speech on gun violence at the White House Tuesday.

On Tuesday President Barack Obama gave an address outlining the executive actions he’s taking to combat America’s gun violence problem.

“You will be checked if you are buying a gun”, Reeves said.

U.S. Rep. Doug Collins, R-Gainesville, criticized Obama’s plan in a written statement.

But the changes Obama is ordering fall far short of his sweeping goals of universal background checks or closing the so-called gun show loophole, which lets hobbyists and collectors get around the licensing system, in part because lawmakers would have to approve the funding for all the hiring.

Gun rights groups oppose both what the President is doing and how he is doing it. To that end, the government will consider other factors, including how many guns a person sells, how frequently, and whether those guns are sold for a profit.

Ludlow said it would add unnecessary restrictions on dealers and won’t do anything to reduce gun violence.

“I think that all guns should be, whether it’s a shotgun, rifle, whatever, it should be at least 90 days”, said Richardson.

“I believe if they are going to be a dealer, they should have a license and be required to follow the same rules as we do”, he said.

The White House said on Monday that the frequency of sales is a “relevant indicator” of which private sellers may be using their status to skirt background-check laws, but acknowledged that there is not a specific threshold separating “private” gun sellers from official dealers.

“I think if they would just enforce the existing laws or enhance sentences on these guys that go out and do violence with guns then maybe that will help stop some of it”, said Ludlow.

The president also calling for a greater focus on mental health information in background checks.

The president said the United States needs to be stronger against guns and if Congress won’t do it, he will.

But Republicans accused him of launching a “war on the Constitution” by not consulting the legislative branch of government and may try to block the move in the courts, which could lead to a legal wrangle extending beyond Mr Obama’s presidency.

Al Jackson was one of dozens of customers checking out the vast array of merchandise at Adventure Outdoors in Smyrna on Tuesday, many of them first-time buyers filling out paperwork for background checks.

And at a rally in Iowa, Democratic presidential front-runner Hillary Clinton praised the president’s executive actions, warning that they could easily be undone by the next president.
