He did not speak at Malia Obama’s commencement ceremony, which he and the first lady attended, along with family and friends of other graduates of the private school in Northwest Washington. However, the family has said that they will remain in Washington, D.C., in order for younger daughter Sasha to complete her own high school education at Sidwell. Her parents have said she will take a gap year, allowing her to enroll after her father’s term ends.
Obama and his wife, Michelle, also have another reason to celebrate Friday.
Former President Bill Clinton delivered the speech at Sidwell Friends in 1997 when his daughter Chelsea graduated.
Neither President Obama nor Michelle Obama have mentioned what Malia has planned for her year off.
The president describes Malia as one of his best friends, and their nightly talks influenced his thinking on social issues like gay marriage.
As a high school student, Malia spent a portion of the summer in 2014 and 2015 working in television studios in NY and Los Angeles.
Her graduation day falls on her sister’s 15th birthday.
By his own admission, Obama has always been dreading the day his first born would mark the end of her high school career. Malia has had summer internships on the NY set of HBO’s “Girls” and in Los Angeles on a CBS sci-fi drama, since canceled, that starred Halle Berry.
She was taught to drive by members of the Secret Service.

Malia was 10 years old when Obama entered office, nearly eight years ago. She’s marked some of life’s milestones in the past seven years, and another one comes Friday: graduation from high school.
