President concerned about attacks on Africans

A week after the killing of a Congolese man in the national capital that stirred a diplomatic row and instigated violence against Indians in Congo, four attacks on African nationals by the residents in Chattarpur were reported on Friday.

The attack came a day prior to Indian Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj’s meeting with African students in connection with the recent attacks on their community. “Two were women” said Nooruddin, the cab driver.

“African students in India shold have no reason to fear for their safety and security”, he said.

This time, it was an Ola Cab driver who was thrashed allegedly by six Africans for refusing to accommodate more than four passengers in his auto. “Committed to welfare of our African brothers & sisters”, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Vikas Swarup tweeted. The driver, who sustained injuries on his face in the altercation, is presently being treated at the AIIMS Trauma Centre.

When the Ola Cabs driver, identified as one Nuruddin, refused allow more than four passengers in his vehicle, he was allegedly thrashed by them.

Separately, Joint Secretary (West Africa) in the MEA Birender Yadav received the family of Oliver at the airport and gave the assurance that the Government would ensure a speedy trial in the case and prosecution of all those responsible for the crime.

“Arrests have already been made and the foreign ministry is also looking into the matter along with us”.

Racism and “afro-phobia is a major problem in India, however, Minister of State for Home Affairs, Kiren Rijiju said on Monday that the government would try its best to prevent such incidents in future”. He said that the family members thanked the Indian government for its assistance.

A statement from the police said, “The meeting, which was held at 3 pm, was organised in order to reassure them (Africans) of prompt redressal of their grievances, and also apprise them of various steps undertaken by police to ensure their safety and security in the city”.

The incident happened when since six African nationals, four men, and two women, wanted to board the vehicle but Nuruddin, the Ola cab driver refused to carry more than four people in his cab.

Abdou Brahim, president of association of African Students in India, said, “Today we met the police commissioner to discuss attacks in Delhi against our people”.
