A 14-year-old Muslim boy became a sensation on social media Wednesday after word spread that he had been placed in handcuffs and suspended for coming to school with a homemade clock that teachers thought resembled a bomb.
“We live in an age where you can’t take things like that to school”, he said. Even after the boy’s project was confirmed not a bomb, the school went on with a three day suspension for Ahmed Mohamed.
Ahmed’s father Mohamed Elhassan Mohamed, who is originally from Sudan, praised his son’s ingenuity, saying he fixes everything around the house, including his father’s phone and computer.
The 14-year-old Muslim boy who was arrested Monday and suspended from school after his homemade clock was mistaken for a bomb is changing schools.
The Islamic Association of Irving and the chief say it was about unity, but that the group asked him some tough questions about Mohamed’s arrest. Chief Larry Boyd said Ahmed was cooperative and described how he made the clock and later determined Ahmed didn’t intend to alarm anyone.

“I think it is because of Islamophobia and the [impact] of 9/11”, he said. “So Obama was pleased to extend an invitation to Ahmed to participate in Astronomy Night that will be hosted here at the White House next month”, he said.
Another teacher at the school was alarmed by the beeping of the clock, and reported it to the authorities.
Ahmed, who was wearing a NASA T-shirt when he was arrested, also received support from many astronauts. “It’s what makes America great”, Obama wrote on Twitter.
Thousands have taken to social media – using the hashtag, #IStandWithAhmed – to criticize the school and the way the young man was treated. Cuban said he would also like to get to know Mohamed. Appearing for a press conference after the absurdity of his arrest was laid to rest, he said he will take Obama up on his offer and transfer schools after.
