President Obama calls Philando Castile’s mother to offer his sympathies

Former TV judge Glenda Hatchett has signed on to represent the family of Philando Castile, who was fatally shot by police during a traffic stop in Falcon Heights, Minnesota, on July 6.

When Valerie Castile’s brother’s cell phone rang Tuesday morning, he quickly handed it to her, saying, “Excuse me, President Obama’s on the phone for you”.

The recording has not yet been authenticated, but the attorney representing the police officer told KARE-TV Tuesday that the details on the tape are accurate.

Roseville Police Chief Rick Mathwig said his officers were on scene at the Philando Castile shooting last week. “We have often seen demonstrations and debates and I raise the critical question, ‘When will there be systemic reform?’ Reform such that, citizens are not in fear of their lives when stopped and questioned by the police”.

She added that Castile’s family was “committed to ensuring that [his] death is not just another statistic”.

Thomas Kelly, the lawyer for St. Anthony police officer Jeronimo Yanez, said Monday that his client thought Castile looked like “a possible match” for a suspect in a recent armed robbery, according to the Associated Press. Hatchett is representing the Castile family in the shooting death by police of Philando Castile last week in Falcon Heights, Minn. after a traffic stop by St. Anthony police. Hatchett said she plans to assemble her own team of investigators for it.

Hatchett said she will “be monitoring closely what happens on the criminal side”, which will decide whether the officer should face trial.

The 32-year-old and his girlfriend were driving with her daughter when they were pulled over for a busted taillight, Reynolds said in her first video. “I told him to get his hand off it”.

“Violence begets violence, and that’s not the way to obtain justice”, she said, telling Obama that her heart goes out to the officers who were killed.
