President Obama Condemns North Korea’s Nuclear Test And Calls For ‘Serious Consequences’

“THAAD brought China and North Korea closer by driving a wedge between China and South Korea”, said John Delury, a historian at Yonsei University in Seoul.

Diplomatic sources say the UN Security Council is to hold a closed-door meeting on Friday afternoon to discuss the matter.

South Korea’s military said the explosive yield of this blast could be nearly twice that of the previous nuclear test. Analysts have expressed fears this could mean North Korea is a step closer to having a useable nuclear weapon.

The test drew swift condemnation from the USA and its regional allies South Korea and Japan, as well as calls for yet more sanctions from the United Nations Security Council.

The state’s television service confirmed the test occurred Friday morning, local time, on the 68th anniversary of North Korea’s founding. And last month, a missile from a North Korean submarine flew about 500 kilometers (310 miles), the longest distance achieved by the North for such a weapon.

“Certainly the posturing of the Fed is creating a lot of noise, and when you get comments like that, it creates a little bit of anxiety in the market”, said Phil Blancato, chief executive of Ladenberg Thalmann Asset Management in NY.

She added that the test is a sign that “sanctions alone have not blunted Pyongyang’s nuclear and missile programs”. Therefore, it calls for the North Korean authorities to abide by the United Nations resolutions, and immediately stop any action that will harm regional security.

The Korea Institute of Nuclear Safety said they have embarked on a radiological measurement to see if they could detect radioactive “Xenon” that might have leaked during the 5th nuclear test.

North Korea’s Friday nuclear test has met with similar criticisms from global bodies and other countries.

India on Friday condemned the nuclear test carried out by North Korea and urged Pyongyang to refrain from actions which “adversely impact peace and stability in the region”. North Korean leader Kim has overseen a robust increase in the number and kinds of missiles tested this year.

“This will have negative consequences primarily for North Korea itself”.

Aside from its official pronouncements, China has offered diverse and ambivalent assessments of who is to blame for tensions on the Korean Peninsula.

It suggested that North Korea might soon become their “junior partner”. The missiles were tracked over North Korea and into the Sea of Japan; they were determined to not have posed a threat to North America.

China still has more leverage than any other country, simply because North Korea conducts 90 percent of its trade with China, much of it through the city of Dandong on the Chinese side of the Yalu River. “I think China will take more effective methods to carry out the sanction”.
