President Obama gives power back to states with new education act

President Obama put his pen to paper Thursday to sign the measure into law.

The rewrite of the law will bring more money to North Carolina and more than 30 other states to help schools in poor areas locate and retain good teachers.
“What I’m very happy about is that Congress is building in time for transitioning from the current system to the new system”, Fabrizio said. “Local and state leaders are best positioned to determine policies that affect Alabama’s students because they have direct interaction with parents and teachers in their communities”. It requires schools to test 95% of students every year from the third through eighth grades, and again in high school. There will also be a change in English language acquisition, suspension rates as well as the measure of test scores. The act has several components and will allow individual states to help develop the criteria to identify and assist failing or underachieving schools compared to a single national model.

Durango School District 9-R Superintendent Dan Snowberger said he is pleased the new legislation will maintain required assessments for third-graders through eighth-graders, and once in high school.
