President Obama’s Final State of the Union, By the Numbers

President Barack Obama seemed at various points during his State of the Union speech Tuesday night to be lecturing Republican presidential candidates.

“We have to reduce the influence of money in our politics so that a handful of families or hidden interests can’t bankroll our elections”. Particularly, 91 percent of Republicans want the GOP-controlled Congress to have more power over the country’s path, while 81 percent of Democrats say the same of Obama.

The House of Representatives passed sanctions against Iran and North Korea Wednesday. Republicans from the House and Senate went to Baltimore for a retreat to plan the year.

While vowing to work to find a cure for cancer, accelerate the shift away from dirty energy and end the last remnants of the Cold War by engaging with Cuba, Obama said that America has been through big changes before. His remarks drew attention to issues that have defined the 2016 presidential campaign, including Donald Trump’s proposed bans on Mexican immigrants and Muslim tourists. It’s just wrong. It diminishes us in the eyes of the world.

“I’ll keep pushing for progress on the work that still needs doing”, he said.

In a “Today” show interview ahead of his final State of the Union address, the Democratic president was asked if he could envision Trump, the billionaire developer known for his bombastic style, making his own State of the Union speech as president.

The United States has only added about 9.3 million jobs during his term – from the time Obama took office in January 2009 through December 2015. “The president reminded us that we have been through tough economic times and prevailed”. They want us to believe that the American dream is no more.

Although not naming the billionaire by name Mr Obama said: “This isn’t a matter of political correctness”.

“And that’s why I stand here confident as I have ever been that the State of our Union is strong”.

He only mentioned guns briefly, despite a recent policy push for executive actions on gun control, though a chair was left empty in the chamber to symbolise victims of gun violence.

“While Isis [Islamic State] is beheading, torturing, burning people in cages he [President Obama] reports climate change is our greatest threat”, said Marco Rubio in a video response”. Earnest said he was unsure if the president would meet with billionaire investor Warren Buffett, who has supported the president’s views on income inequality but who opposed the administration’s stance on the Keystone XL pipeline.
