And no, it wasn’t upping a candidate for their upcoming election, or making a provocative call on a political play. Judging from the most people reacted online, you would have thought the paper had told people to let their cats use their guacamole as a litter box.

“You do not put peas in guacamole”, Bush tweeted. “Trust us”, the newspaper said. His tweet: “Respect the nyt, yet not buying peas in guac. onions, garlic, hot peppers”.

The reaction on social media was swift, outrageous, and often hilarious.

“Peas add intense sweetness and a chunky texture to the dip”, Melissa Clark explained, and peas help to keep guacamole a bright green.

Of course, the pea guacamole wasn’t without its detractors at the time. I was expecting some mind blowing experience because everyone spoke so highly about it and I was totally underwhelmed. The collective response was strong and sudden – adding peas to guacamole is about as un-American as it gets. Even non-Texans, including President Obama, have chimed in.
