President strongly condemns terrorist attack in France

Hours after a truck killed 80 people and injured over 100 in Nice as the city celebrated the Bastille Day, little is still known about the motives of the attacker, who is said to be a French resident of Tunisian origin.

Hollande announced an extension of a state of emergency for three months in the country, where Islamic State gunmen and suicide bombers killed 130 people in Paris about eight months ago.

The attack was of an “undeniable terrorist nature, ‘ a sombre Hollande said in a televised national address, confirming that ‘several children” were among the dead as families came together to celebrate France’s national day. Christian Estrosi, president of the Provence-Alpes-Côte-d’Azur region that includes Nice, told French media that the driver also shot at people.

Le Figaro reports police officers positioned at the entrance to the Promenade des Anglais shot at the truck’s cabin to stop the driver from entering the no-drive area, but the driver managed to evade the shots and struck the crowd.

He said: “The United States will continue to stand firmly with the French people during this time of tragedy”. The photo shows what appears to be bullet holes in the windshield of the white truck.

A truck plowed into a group of pedestrians in Nice, France, Thursday night as people celebrated Bastille Day, authorities said.

President Obama, along with a number of other celebrities and politicians, condemned the horrifying attack while expressing support for the people affected by the incident. The witness said he saw only the driver.

“Investigations are now under way to establish if the individual acted alone or if he had accomplices who might have fled”, France’s interior ministry spokesman said, but he denied reports that a hostage-taking incident had taken place. The shocking attack left at least 77 revelers dead and dozens more injured right in front of the hotel she and her team were staying in.
