Presidential Candidates Turn Their Attention To Stop On Primary Calendar

Vice presidential speculation heated up this week after Cruz confirmed his campaign was vetting Fiorina as a running mate.

If the Fiorina announcement was an effort to shake up the race, the Trump camp was instantly dismissive. All Cruz can do is throw obstacles in his path.

Having several presidential candidates in Indiana Wednesday – including Cruz, Trump and Democratic candidate Bernie Sanders – was exciting, Karen Crosby said.

In an Associated Press-GfK poll conducted in December 2015, Republican voters were more likely to say they had a favorable than an unfavorable view of Fiorina by a 47 percent to 20 percent margin, with 32 percent unable to give a rating.

Aminoff said he had also been told Fiorina was Cruz’s choice. She cast Trump and Clinton as a pair of liberals who would do little to shake up Washington.

“When Ted Cruz is the president of the United States, I suspect Hillary Clinton will be prosecuted”.

Politico calls the attention-grabbing move a “desperate gambit” from a candidate who had been mathematically eliminated from winning enough delegates for the nomination less than 24 hours earlier.

But if he does not win 1,237 delegates, there will be a contested Republican convention in July. Their preliminary indications are that Trump will get 12 delegates, Kasich will get five and Cruz will get two, though the calculations are still being sorted out.

Fiorina said she’s had tough fights all her life and “tough fights don’t worry me a bit”.

That’s the previous year no GOP nominee was decided before the National Convention.

“Our goal is peace and prosperity, not war and destruction”, he declared in the 38-minute address that was heavy on broad statements and light on specific policy details. “He has not used his influence in the conservative movement to rally against Trump”.

He also used the address to target Clinton, his expected opponent in a general election. “They are the system”, she said.

Not coincidentally, California awards most of its 172 GOP delegates to the victor of each of its 53 congressional districts, so there are rewards for poaching support in the state’s most liberal and most conservative areas even if Trump leads statewide. Trump drew thousands of supporters to the venue last week, marking his first campaign stop ahead of the state’s May 3 primary. “I’m so happy I can see them more”. Trump’s got 996. There are 57 delegates at stake in Indiana.

Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, campaigning in IN as well Wednesday, conceded that the delegate math was not in his favor.

“You can’t help but wince”, Rep. Luke Messer, R-Ind., said of Cruz’s gaffe in an interview with ABC News’ Rick Klein.

The Texas senator plans to unveil his pick for vice president Wednesday afternoon in Indianapolis.

Fiorina built her ill-fated presidential bid around her business experience as former president of Hewlett-Packard, a company she led from 1999 to 2005. Fiorina is well-liked by Cruz’s staff and has campaigned with him more than any other surrogate, and has spoken for him with reporters.

But Cruz pledged to keep the campaign alive, even with an IN loss.

“Trump has demonstrated repeatedly during the months-long campaign that he is wholly unsuited to serve as president”, the editorial says, hitting the real estate magnate for his positions on national security, job creation, immigration, global trade and foreign affairs.

Clinton, already in control of the Democratic race, defeated challenger Bernie Sanders in Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania and CT. The Downs Center said 15.8 percent of respondents identified themselves as political independents who plan to vote in the GOP primary.
