Stating that Nathan worked for making workers’ lives better, he said that he contributed a lot for Singapore’s growth and success. In a separate statement, PMK founder S Ramadoss also expressed his condolences to the family and friends of the former Singapore President.

Nathan suffered a stroke on July 31 and had been hospitalised. Former President S.R. Nathan is “an inspiration to all of us”, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said in a condolence letter to Mrs Nathan today. He has been “in critical condition” in the Intensive Care Unit at Singapore General Hospital since then.

Mr Nathan was sworn in as the sixth President of Singapore on 1 September 1999.

Nathan, a protégé of Singapore’s best known president, Lee Kwan Yee, had held several top positions in the civil service and was high commissioner to Malaysia in 1988 and Singapore’s ambassador to the United States from 1990 to 1996. His body will lie in state at the Parliament House from Thursday up till Friday at noon for those wishing to pay their last respects.

Nathan also served as Singapore’s Ambassador-at-Large, and later pro-chancellor of the National University of Singapore.
